The most dangerous roads and intersections in Virginia

Crashes happen every day in Virginia, but some locations stand out for how often accidents occur. Certain highways and intersections see collisions year after year, and the numbers show clear patterns. Here’s where the risks are highest.

Roanoke and Cave Spring

In Roanoke, Orange Avenue and Williamson Road are the single most dangerous intersection in Virginia, with more than 100 crashes recorded every year. Not far away, Melrose Avenue and Peters Creek Road see over 50 collisions annually. In Cave Spring, the intersection of Electric Road (VA-419) and Brambleton Avenue has become a repeat hotspot because constant turning traffic from the surrounding shopping area creates sudden stops and congestion. According to the Virginia DMV crash report, intersections like these account for more than 40 percent of statewide crashes each year.

Salem and Christiansburg

Main Street (US-460 BUS) in Christiansburg ranks among the most collision-prone stretches in the region, with congestion and multiple signals fueling rear-end crashes and abrupt lane changes. Salem faces similar issues on I-81. It remains one of the state’s deadliest corridors. Statewide, I-81 saw more than 5,000 crashes in 2023, many involving tractor-trailers. The combination of truck traffic, commuter congestion and sudden weather changes makes this corridor particularly challenging to navigate safely.

Blacksburg

Blacksburg Road and North Fork Road are especially hazardous at night. Reduced visibility and sharp curves increase the likelihood of serious accidents. I-81 continues its crash record throughout this region, adding to totals that have already placed it among the most dangerous highways in Virginia.

Other nearby routes, such as I-64 and US-460, carry steady traffic between rural and urban areas. The DMV report shows that highways like these accounted for more than 900 fatalities and serious injuries combined in 2023. With college traffic mixing in, the risks around Blacksburg are often higher than drivers anticipate.

Staying safe when risks are highest

Now that you know which roads and intersections see the most accidents, the real question becomes how you use that information to protect yourself. Slowing down in busy shopping areas, giving extra space on I-81, and staying cautious at night are practical steps that can reduce your risk. But if a crash does happen, having an experienced legal team by your side can make the process of protecting your rights and moving forward far less overwhelming.
